After the end of the year, the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will instead be issued. Details on how to apply for these new cards are yet to be released. The UK government advise taking out travel insurance with health cover even so. If you\u2019re in any EU country, the EHIC currently entitles you to state-provided medical treatment. You\u2019re covered if you fall ill or have an accident within the EU, or if you\u2019re in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. <\/p><p>The GHIC will cover the same as the EHIC, including maternity care, pre-existing conditions, chronic conditions, as well as emergencies. To ensure specialist treatment is available, like dialysis or cancer treatment, &#8220;must be subject to a prior agreement between the insured person and the unit providing the treatment&#8221;, according to the new Brexit agreement of 24th December.<\/p><p>An estimated 5.6% of the UK population is made up by EU nationals, approximately 3.7 million. Under the Brexit agreement, the EU nationals\u2019 rights to use the NHS are enshrined in UK law and the EIHC card will still be valid when travelling. They will also be entitled to apply for the new GHICs too.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re looking to live in Spain, to get residential status, you\u2019ll need to have your own private health insurance. The EHIC cards won\u2019t cover you in that instance.
